Chrissi carries spare click pedals and spare cleats for cycling shoes.
First aid kit and Toiletries
Our first aid kit and toiletries:
Our First Aid Kit consists of two different off-the-shelf kits that we have put together in order to fit our needs, containing: Tweezers, cannulas (good for splinters, etc.), antiseptic wipes, various bandages and wound dressings, sterile gloves, first aid blanket, scissors, tape and plasters in different sizes.
Our Medication is in the bag on the top left hand side of the picture and will be listed below in the next section (see title below)
We have a bivy bag in case of emergency
We carry sun protection, insect spray and a poison remover for sucking out insect-, spider-, scorpion- or snake bites.
Toiletries Francesco: tooth brush, tooth paste, dental floss, shampoo, electrical shaver, nail clipper, lip balm
Toiletries Chrissi: tooth brush, denttabs tablets for cleaning teeth, dental floss, deodorant, baby wipes, mini shaver, desinfection spray, cream for face and hands, lip balm, nail clipper, solid shampoo bar, comb, hair oil, female products (not on picture)
Medication
We have put together a first aid medication kit for emergency situations without a doctor or hospital nearby. You probably don't need antibiotics for regions with high population density - however, everyone needs to decide for themselves. This is our med kit we take with us whilst traveling:
In case of diarrhea - immodium akut lingual tablets that dissolve in the mouth within seconds and help very fast. Very important: Do not use it in case of gastrointestinal infections as it's important that the virus can leave the body.
Electrolytes are very helpful if needed.
We always take painkillers with us: Aspirin complex, Paracetamol 500mg and Ibuprofene 400mg - depending on the reason for the pain.
Tiger Balm: The red ('warm') one for almost any kind of muscle ache, the white ('cold') one for any kind of cold or headaches, sniffles or bronchial discomforts. Important side note: Tiger balm cannot cure the cold itself but it makes dealing with it a lot more pleasant.
Betaisodona is an antiseptic for the use on skin and wounds. It disinfects wounds and contains iodine.
Cortisone cream: If the skin is inflamed and itchy, the rash can be treated with cortisone cream. It relieves itching and inflammation. It can be helpful when a sunburn, insect bites or allergic reactions are itching.
Antibiotics: We carry one pack of broad spectrum antibiotics that can be used (in case of emergency!) with most bacterial infections (throat, nose, ear, bronchial and lung infections, infections of the urinary tract, kidneys, infections of skin and tissue, teeth, bones and joints). In our case we use Amoxicillin - but, and that is important: Only after speaking to a doctor, at least via telephone.
Chrissi also carries a one-dose antibiotic for bladder infections that can be used in case of an ongoing infection that can not be solved with other natural substances.
Vermox is a broad spectrum anthelmintic for the treatment of roundworms and tapeworms - those are the worms you usually get when eating or drinking something contaminated. Again: this is only for an emergency in case there is no doctor available and if possible, after speaking to a medical professional.
Only in our case: Chrissi sometimes has exercise-induced asthma/problems with breathing after long ascents. So, we carry one anti-asthmatic inhalation spray just in case.
Important notes:
We're not medical professionals so these are no general recommendations - it's a list of meds we think we might need and thus have put together after talking to our doctors and other long distance cyclists.
With meds (e.g. Antibiotics) it is important to know about your allergies and intolerances to avoid dangerous side effects.
Be aware that certain meds are not allowed in certain countries (e.g. strong painkillers or certain psychotropic drugs). It is always better to get a list of your medication signed of your doctor that notes the doses and total number of the medication (especially for flights).
